Jack Mendrin was already a third generation farmer in California's central valley when he started his own farm in 1973. His three children, Jacob, David and Kathy were born and raised on the family farm, and in 2002 they decided to continue the family tradition by buying a farm together. They decided to farm their new land organically because it allowed them to start small while still generating enough income to support three growing families.
Today Jack, Jacob and David Mendrin produce high quality, certified organic red, russet, and yukon gold potatoes as well as red and yellow onions on 180 acres. Although they had a lot of experience growing potatoes and onions conventionally, they encountered many challenges learning to produce their crops organically. They continue to learn and improve their organic weeding, crop rotation, and pest control techniques every year. Despite the many challenges they have overcome, they regard the fact that they have continued farming together as a family to be their primary success. Their goal is simple: to keep the farm going through the fifth generation of Mendrin farmers and beyond. With the Mendrin's hard working dedication to producing great organic potatoes and onions, the future of Family Farm Organics looks bright indeed.
