Fraserland Organics, Inc.

Fraserland Organics farms over 1,000 acres of fertile Fraser River delta land just 15 minutes south of the metropolis of Vancouver, British Columbia. Fraserland Organics is an alliance of three longtime Fraser delta farming families: the Harris', the Singhs, and the Chongs, who have combined their experience and resources to form an innovative and, above all, sucessful organic vegetable farm. Through the generations, these families have seen their production methods come full-circle, from traditional horse-powered farming in the 1890s through the era of chemical-based agriculture, to organic production in the early 1990s.

Brent and Shelly Harris and their associates Danny Chong and Ab Singh know the unique challenges of suburban farming, as well as those related to organic practices. Their tractors spend a lot of time in traffic and negotiating highway off-ramps. They also employ a full-time researcher to help them test new crops, evaluate pest control techniques and simply figure out what grows best where, when and why. Together, they produce certified organic peas and beans, fresh sweet corn, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and leafy vegetables, both for local markets in Vancouver and for shipment across Canada and the US.

The success of Fraserland Organics also provides a ray of hope to a struggling agricultural economy of the region, as the Delta area's once vibrant vegetable processing industry shut down or relocated in the 1980s, with devastating effect. Fraserland Organics is proof positive that with hard work, dedication, creative thinking, and neighborly cooperation, organic family farmers can thrive in today's challenging agricultural market.
