Three of the best known varieties of Asian Pears, the Hosui, Shinseiki, and 20th Century are favorites which set the standards for great Asian Pear flavor and crunch.
The Hosui Asian Pear is golden russet in color with a very aromatic flavor and a spectacularly sweet, juicy crunch.
The Shinseiki Asian Pear is yellow-green in color with small freckles and smooth skin. Its white flesh is sweet to slightly tart, juicy and aromatic.
The 20th Century is similar in appearance and flavor to the Shinseiki. It has smooth yellow skin and firm white flesh.
Harvest of these three varieties begins in early September. Asian Pears are picked ripe and ready to eat and should be kept refrigerated to maintain their distinctively crisp, crunchy texture.
